Using Axis Cameras in Hazardous Locations
Axis Communications manufactures industry-leading IP cameras trusted across commercial and industrial applications. However, standard Axis cameras carry no ATEX, IECEx, or NEC Class I Division 1 certification and cannot be installed directly in hazardous classified areas. The solution used by system integrators worldwide is to use Axis camera explosion-proof housings, which is an Axis camera module inside a Veilux ATEX/IECEx certified explosion-proof housing — combining Axis imaging performance with proven explosion protection.
Compatible Axis Camera Models
The following Axis box-style and module cameras fit inside Veilux Axis camera explosion-proof housings. All require a Veilux housing with a compatible lens port (CS-mount or C-mount adapter available).
| Model | Resolution | Sensor | Lens Mount | Operating Temp | Recommended Veilux Housing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AXIS P1375 | 5MP (2592×1944) | 1/2.8″ CMOS | CS-mount | -30°C to +50°C | Veilux Explosion-Proof Box Housing |
| AXIS Q1615 Mk III | 1080p Full HD | 1/2.8″ CMOS | CS-mount | -40°C to +65°C | Veilux Explosion-Proof Box Housing |
| AXIS P1377 | 5MP | 1/2.8″ CMOS | CS-mount | -30°C to +50°C | Veilux Explosion-Proof Box Housing |
| AXIS Q1700-LE | 2MP LPR | 1/2.8″ CMOS | CS-mount | -40°C to +65°C | Veilux Explosion-Proof Box Housing |
| AXIS P1448-LE | 8MP multi-sensor | 1/2.5″ CMOS | Fixed multi-lens | -50°C to +60°C | Veilux Wide-Angle Housing (custom) |
How the Integration Works
Veilux explosion-proof housings are ATEX Zone 1 / IECEx Ex d IIC T6 certified and accept industry-standard camera modules through a front lens port. The Axis camera is mounted on the internal camera tray, the lens is threaded through the housing window port, and PoE or 24VAC power is run through an explosion-proof conduit entry. The Veilux housing provides the gas-tight enclosure required for Class I Division 1 and Zone 1 compliance — the Axis camera provides the imaging capability.
Integration Requirements
- Conduit entry: All cable entries must use explosion-proof conduit seals (EYS fittings per NEC 501.15)
- Lens port: CS-mount cameras use the standard 1″ clear borosilicate glass window port; C-mount adapter available
- Power: PoE (802.3at) or 24VAC supplied through explosion-proof junction box
- Camera settings: Axis camera is configured via AXIS Device Manager or AXIS Camera Station before housing installation
Benefits of Axis + Veilux vs. Native Axis Explosion-Proof Cameras
- Access to Axis’s full camera line (including latest 4K and thermal models) without waiting for ATEX certification
- Familiar Axis interface for operators already running AXIS Camera Station or third-party VMS
- Veilux housings are independently certified — swap camera models without re-certifying the installation
- Cost advantage over purpose-built explosion-proof PTZ cameras for fixed-mount applications
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does placing an Axis camera in a Veilux housing create a certified explosion-proof assembly?
- The Veilux housing carries ATEX and IECEx Ex d certification. The certification covers the housing as a protective enclosure. The camera module inside is not individually certified, but the complete assembly (housing + camera) meets the requirements when installed per the housing certification documentation. Consult your area classification authority for site-specific requirements.
- Which Axis cameras are NOT suitable for housing integration?
- Axis dome and bullet cameras with integrated outdoor enclosures are not suitable — their fixed lens and molded body cannot be separated from the outer housing. Only box-style cameras with removable CS-mount lenses are compatible. PTZ cameras require a Veilux explosion-proof PTZ housing with slip-ring power feed.
- Can I use AXIS Camera Station with a Veilux-housed Axis camera?
- Yes. The Axis camera inside the Veilux housing connects to your network exactly like any Axis camera. AXIS Camera Station, AXIS Device Manager, and any ONVIF-compatible VMS will recognize it and manage it normally.
