Explosion-Proof Cameras for Oil & Gas Facilities
Oil and gas facilities — refineries, drilling rigs, tank farms, compressor stations, and pipelines — require surveillance cameras certified for Class I Division 1 or Zone 1 hazardous areas where flammable vapors and gases are present. Standard IP cameras cannot be used in these environments. Explosion-proof cameras are specifically engineered and third-party certified to contain any internal ignition and prevent ignition of the surrounding atmosphere.
Hazardous Area Classifications in Oil & Gas
Before selecting a camera, your facility’s electrical engineer or safety officer must define the area classification:
- Class I Division 1 (NEC 500): Flammable vapors or gases are present continuously or intermittently under normal operating conditions. Required at wellheads, process units, pump houses, and tank battery vents.
- Class I Division 2 (NEC 500): Flammable materials are handled in closed systems and present only under abnormal conditions. Common in tank farms, compressor buildings, and pipeline stations.
- Zone 1 (IEC 60079 / ATEX): Equivalent to Division 1 under the international zone classification system. Required for offshore platforms under ATEX and for US projects following API RP 505.
- Zone 2: Equivalent to Division 2 under the zone system.
Gas group classification also matters: most oil and gas environments fall under Group C (ethylene) or Group D (propane, methane), though hydrogen (Group A/IIC) processes require the most stringent enclosures.
