Most IP dome and bullet cameras draw 5-13W, well within standard 802.3af PoE. PTZ cameras and cameras with built-in heaters for extreme cold environments typically require PoE+ (30W).

PoE Switch vs. PoE Injector: Which Do You Need?

PoE Switches

A PoE switch powers multiple cameras and provides network switching for all of them. Common configurations are 8-port, 16-port, and 24-port. For any installation with more than two cameras, a PoE switch is more economical than individual injectors. Choose a managed PoE switch for per-port monitoring and remote power cycling.

PoE Injectors

A midspan PoE injector adds power to a single Ethernet run between your switch and camera. Used when your existing switch is not PoE-capable and you need to power one or two cameras without replacing the switch. Not practical for large installations.

Cable Distance: The 100-Meter Rule

Standard Ethernet has a maximum run length of 100 meters (328 feet) per segment. Most commercial installations are well within this limit. For longer runs, options include:

  • PoE extenders: Insert a small extender unit at the 100m mark to extend the run by another 100m
  • Fiber with media converter: Run fiber between buildings or long distances, convert back to Ethernet at the camera end
  • Intermediate switch: Place a small PoE switch midway through a long run

  • Confirm PoE standard compatibility between camera and switch (af, at, or bt)
  • Add up total wattage for all cameras — don’t exceed the switch’s total PoE budget
  • Use Cat5e minimum; Cat6 preferred for runs over 50m or cameras requiring PoE+
  • Choose ONVIF-compliant cameras for compatibility with any NVR brand
  • Verify IP rating: IP66 for outdoor, IP67 for areas with direct water exposure
